Most Illinois QC School Districts Continue to Require Masks

Most school districts in the Illinois Quad Cities will continue to require students and staff to wear masks. That's despite the court ruling in central Illinois on Friday challenging the state's mask mandate, and issuing an injunction.

For example, a statement from the Moline School District says "we will keep these measures in place until there is a final resolution of these issues by the courts or a change in guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education or the Illinois Department of Public Health."

Colona Superintendent Carl Johnson says in a letter to district residents that "our attorneys have advised this ruling does not impact Colona District 190 students and staff members, as we were not named in the suits and 'class action status' was not granted."

One district has made masks optional. Rockridge Superintendent Perry Miller says that as a result of the court ruling masks are recommended but not required in school buildings. But masks are still required on school buses.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois. While a graduate student in the Public Affairs Reporting Program at the University of Illinois at Springfield (then known as Sangamon State University), he got his first taste of public radio, covering Illinois state government for WUIS. Here in the Quad Cities, Herb worked for WHBF Radio before coming to WVIK in 1987. Herb also produces the weekly public affairs feature Midwest Week – covering the news behind the news by interviewing reporters about the stories they cover.
