The River Bend Foodbank needs help dealing with increased demand and higher expenses. Jay Pearce reports.
President and CEO Mike Miller says since the coronavirus outbreak and lockdown, food insecurity has increased more than 30% in the foodbank's 23-county service area.
In addition, the agency is collecting a lot less donated food.
Miller also says there are serious interruptions in the supply chain.
The Davenport-based River Bend Foodbank supplies more than 300 food pantries, meal sites, and soup kitchens in eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois.
For the time being, it's suspended charging them for the food it has to buy. It needs cash donations the most right now. Donations can be made at the River Bend Foodbank's website.
Miller also says anyone who needs food shouldn't hesitate to ask. A list of partner pantries and meal sites is posted below. The foodbank website also has resources for people to apply for food stamps, known as SNAP.
