Recycling is about to get easier for residents in Scott County. Today, the Waste Commission announced Davenport and Bettendorf will switch to a single stream recycling system this summer.
Spokeswoman Brandy Welvaert says since recycling started in Scott County over 20 years ago, residents have separated paper products from glass, plastic, and metal. Now, the county wants to simplify the process.
She hopes allowing residents to recycle everything in one bin will increase recycling and keep more materials out of landfills.
What the Waste Commission is calling the "Go All In" program will also let residents recycle more types of plastic than the current system.
The Scott Area Recycling Center is under construction to accommodate the changes, and will be hiring a new supervisor. The center should re-open in August, when Davenport and Bettendorf residents will be given new, 95-gallon recycling carts.
Welvaert says the new recycling carts will come with an information packet, explaining when and how to use the single stream recycling system.
Scott County will also launch a new website next week, goallinqc.org, for residents to learn about recycling changes.
