After serving one prison term for attacking a woman, a Muscatine man faces a second prison term following her death. Tuesday 51 year old Hiram Serrano pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and burglary, and agreed to accept a 20 year sentence.
According to Muscatine County Attorney Alan Ostergren, Serrano attacked Theresa Jackson in 1990, causing serious injuries including paralysis. He was convicted of attempted murder and willful injury and sent to prison for up to 35 years.
After living as a quadriplegic for 22 years, Jackson died in 2012, and the medical examiner determined that since she died due to her original injuries, her death was a homicide.
Ostergren says Serrano had since been released from prison and had been living what he called "a crime free life."
His sentencing is set for April 21st.
