Preventing floods in Galesburg could cost more money for residents. At public meetings tonight and tomorrow, city officials will talk with property owners about a proposed stormwater utility fee.
It would pay for sewer maintenance and repair.
Homeowners would pay a flat annual fee of $52.20, starting next spring. And commercial property owners would pay based on the size of their property.
Larry Cox, Director of Public Works, says the Galesburg sewer system hasn't been upgraded since the city was founded 170 years ago.
The Galesburg City Council will consider the proposed new stormwater utility fee next month and take a final vote in December.
