State Grant Awarded For Proposed I-74 Bike And Pedestrian Trail

Illinois Department of Transportation

A proposed bike and pedestrian trail may connect the new I-74 bridge and Avenue of the Cities in Moline.

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Monday it would cover about 80% of the cost of the $2.4 million project, with the City of Moline covering the remaining amount.

The roughly one-and-a-half mile multi-use trail would run parallel to Interstate 74.

"It will bring a lot of construction jobs in the process of building it," said State Sen. Neil Anderson, of Andalusia. "Moreover, with this happening, coupled with the I-74 bridge and the Amtrak that will be coming through here in the next two or three years, it's going to totally change the face of the Quad Cities."

The proposed trail would also connect the bike and pedestrian facility on the new I-74 bridge, allowing cyclists and pedestrians to cross over to Iowa’s riverfront trails.

"People love exercising outside, and this trail will provide them great views and experiences in downtown Moline, over the Mississippi River, and along the riverfronts on both the Illinois side and the Iowa side," said Anderson.

No timeline for the project has been announced.
