Instead of mowing lawns or cooking hamburgers, some local young people are learning filmmaking this summer. They've been hired by a production company called Fresh Films to help film episodes of a kids show, "Detectives Club."

Friday morning they were jammed together between racks in the Augustana College costume shop, helping a professional crew. The setting today is supposed to be a thrift shop.

Virginia Martinez from Silvis is a student at UT High School, and she's interested in a career in film work.
Also on the crew is Ethan Kirkpatrick, from Rock Island and Rock Island High School.

Fresh Films director EstlinFeigley graduated from Augustana in 1993. He wants the kids to learn that film work is a lot more than just actors and directors.

He hired local high school and college students to work with his professional crew - on scripts, setting up the camera, holding the mike boom, plus marketing and public relations.

Filming at Augustana began last Sunday, and will continue through Saturday, then it's off to another city for more episodes of "Detectives Club."

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
