They live in two apartment buildings, with one scheduled to close on July 31st, and the other on August 31st.
Rich Oswald, Director of Development and Neighborhood Services, says the city has been trying to get the owner of the Crestwood Apartments, at Bridge and 35th Streets, to bring it up to code. But the owner would not comply, and instead notified tenants they would have to leave by the end of this month.
The owner of the other, in the 100 block of East 35th Street, will close it at the end of August to make repairs.
One of the agencies trying to help is the Salvation Army. And spokeswoman Kelly Larned says there's not enough shelter space for all these people.
"Our plan right now is to meet with the tenants, assess the situation and see what their needs actually are, and then go from there. Then I can go back and try to get money from funders or the city, to say 'we need x amount of dollars for application fees, and we need x amount of dollars for rental assistance.'"
Also involved are Humility Homes and Community Action of Eastern Iowa.
The owner of the Crestwood, Crestwood Apartments LLC, is based in Forest Lake, Minnesota, while the East 35th Street owner is Chris Salazar, doing business as Arsenal Properties.
