John Deere plans to expand access to diagnostic information -- what it calls "self-repair resources."

This week, the Moline-based company announced that in May, customers and independent repair shops will be able to buy access to "Customer Service ADVISOR" at JohnDeereStore.com.

It's a database of operator, diagnostic, and technical manuals for John Deere products. A subscription allows users to connect to tractors and other large machines with a data link that allows owners to clear and update codes, take diagnostic readings, and perform limited calibrations.

Then next year, Deere and Company says access will expand to include secure software updates for download.

Many product owners have been asking state and federal governments to enact a right to repair their own property, including Deere equipment and smartphones.
