Zoo Director, Lee Jackson, says the humanitarian crisis is severe. And zookeepers are doing the best they can at the zoo in the capitol city, Kiev. Zookeepers, employees, and their families are living at the zoo to take care of the animals while the city is bombed.
He has also received a notice about a nature and wildlife preserve in Ukraine, the Askaniya-Nova Biosphere Reserve. Jackson plans to talk with members of Niabi Zoo's Foundation to explore ways to help the biosphere.
Recent information about the natural reserve is difficult to find. But one Tweet says it's known as the Ukrainian Serengeti and is now under Russia's control. WVIK News could not confirm that.
