"Now is the time to re-fresh the airport in name, look, and space." That's the goal of a major renovation of the Quad City Airport announced Tuesday by Director of Aviation Ben Leischner
He says he's been working for several years on how to update it with a focus on the future.
"This includes transforming the airport's facilities, technologies, and practices to be more passenger friendly, flexible, and capable of handling emerging technologies for decades to come."
More than 20 million dollars will be spent on everything from the curbside and ticketing areas, to the TSA checkpoint, the atrium, and the gates for arriving and departing airplanes.
Also included in the updating is the name - for decades it's been the Quad City International Airport, but from now on it is the Quad Cities International Airport.
"This subtle yet important change is more inclusive of the region we serve and it shows solidarity with the naming conventions of other organizations in our area. We are many but as Quad Citizens we can become one - it's that commitment to collaboration and unification that will drive our community to future success."
These projects will be funded through a mixture of federal grants, airport revenue, and borrowing. The ticketing and baggage area has not been updated since 1985, while the gate area was last renovated in 2001.
