News headlines for August 7, 2017

  • Hundreds of professional workers employed by the state are no longer receiving overtime pay due to rules resulting from Iowa's new collective bargaining law. But officials told a legislative committee last week they're making exceptions for employees in high demand so they don't leave for the private sector.

  • Public school funding can't be released until the Illinois General Assembly agrees on a new, "evidence-based" funding plan. But last week, Governor Bruce Rauner vetoed large portionsof Senate Bill 1 — the only such plan that's passed both chambers.

  • An Iraq War veteran and former congressional candidate has decided to run for Iowa Secretary of State. Jim Mowrer, a Democrat, grew up on a farm in Boone County, but now lives in Des Moines.
