The potential sale of a historic building in Rock Island was pulled from the city council's agenda last night. Aldermen were supposed to decide whether to accept bids for the Hauberg mansion on 24th Street.
City Manager, Thomas Thomas, says the Hauberg mansion was built in the early 1900s. And, the city acquired the 20-room brick mansion in the 1950s.
Now, the Parks and Recreation department spends about $40,000 a year to maintain the building and grounds. And, the city hasn't been able to generate enough money through rentals.
He says several residents have opposed to the bidding process and potential sale because of the mansion's historic significance. Last night, Mayor Dennis Pauley removed the proposal from the agenda, saying the council and residents need more information.
Thomas says all plans are on hold for now.
