The first set of arches for the new I-74 bridge has arrived in the Quad Cities. The contractor shipped them from Indiana on a barge via the Illinois and Mississippi rivers.

Project Manager, Danielle Alvarez, says Lunda Construction is completing the foundations in the Mississippi River. And before attaching pieces of the enormous, white arch, crews will have to mill the tops of the foundations to assure a precise fit.

The steel arch segments will be stored on a covered barge near the construction site.

It's been twelve years since the Illinois and Iowa Departments of Transportation approved the basic design of the new I-74 bridge. It'll be a true arch bridge with what engineers call, "a basket handle arch."
