Davenport to Spend Record Amount on Streets, Sewers

Plans are in the works to spend a record-breaking amount of money on streets and sewers in Davenport. That was the message today from Mayor Bill Gluba, in his annual State of the City address, to members of the Davenport Rotary Club. 
Gluba says the city is financially strong, so the capital improvement budget can be 52 percent larger than next year. That includes $41 million to fix streets and sewers. And $8 million to renovate the Central Fire Station. 
And he says making sure the tax base continues to grow is key to the city's progress.
Gluba worries about the growing number of students who live in poverty-- an estimated one out of every four children in Davenport-- and how that affects their education.  

And during the past year, the mayor says Davenport has made all of its spending available for people to look at online, using a tool called Open Checkbook.
