WVIK News

A new use for an old school building.  The Davenport School District is leasing space at the former J.B. Young Opportunity Center School to eight local groups.

John Border, Community Education Specialist, says its now known as the J.B. Young Opportunity Center.

"Well the neighborhood deserves a place like this. We took something that wasn't positive and transformed it into something that is going to carry tremendous potential for kids, family, and students here in the neighborhood. So its for them that we are doing this,"

This morning Davenport School officials and tenants held a ribbon cutting ceremony and gave tours.

"Its been a physical transformation of the first floor because there was a lot of work that needed to be done to renovate the spaces for our partners to be comfortable and safe."

The tenants include, the Boys and Girls Club Teen Center, Safer Foundation, Children’s Village preschool, Art Legacy League, Davenport Schools ProStart Culinary Arts program, Davenport School Museum, Pena’s Boxing Club, Quad City Youth Sports Foundation, and the
Davenport Community Food Pantry.
