Owners of John Deere farm equipment will soon have greater access to "digital agriculture." Tuesday it announced an agreement with a San Francisco-based software company, The Climate Corporation.

Climate senior vice president, John Raines, says farmers will be able to upload data "from the cab" wirelessly as they plant or harvest, and have it analyzed to increase their productivity.
The new agreement gives Climate Corporation exclusive access to data from farmers using Deere equipment.

In addition, Deere will buy the equipment maker, Precision Planting LLC, a subsidiary of Climate. That follows the announcement Monday that Deere plans to buy the leading maker of precision planters in Europe.

The Climate Corporation is a subsidiary of Monsanto.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
