For this week's Big Story, Quad-City Times reporter Deirdre Baker looked at the impact of WWI on the Quad Cities — from local soldiers who served in the war, to discrimination against German residents.

About the photo: Army Master Sgt. Louis Henry, Davenport, was in the 804th Pioneer Infantry, and is shown while in Paris, after the war ended in November 1918. He grew up in Davenport, in a neighborhood called “Germantown,” and because of his knowledge of Germans, worked with the U.S. Army in intelligence efforts. After the war he returned to Davenport, worked in photography for 45 years, and founded the Marshal Brown Post 482 of the American Legion in Davenport. His grandson is the Rev. Melvin Grimes, Moline, who said his grandfather got promoted to master sergeant on the battlefield.
