A group of concerned residents is trying to keep a historic building in Rock Island from being sold. The "Friends of Hauberg Civic Center" group formed after the city announced it might accept bids for the over 100-year-old mansion.

Member Diane Oestreich says the Hauberg family gifted the mansion to Rock Island almost 70 years ago. Since then it's been used for public meetings and events. But the city says it can no longer afford the $40,000 a year to maintain the building and grounds.
Oestreich hopes her group will be able to raise the money needed to keep the building open and public. She suggests tours, gift shops, and better advertising.

She says the group is not trying to compete with other parks, which have more responsibility and less funding.

She says Hauberg family members from across the country have been in contact with the "Friends of Hauberg Civic Center," hoping the group will convince the city to keep the mansion.
