State parks want to help you burn some calories after the holidays. On New Year's Day, parks in all 50 states will hold "First Day Hikes," including the Mines of Spain State Recreation Area in Dubuque.
Park Ranger Wayne Buchholtz says the state park in Dubuque has participated in the event for five years. Last year, 79 people joined him for a mile-long hike.
Buchholtz hopes 100 people will hike this year. The "First Day Hike" begins at 1 pm on Friday, at the Mines of Spain State Recreation Area. Visitors should dress for the weather.
18 parks in Iowa will hold "First Day Hikes" on New Year's Day, including the Maquoketa Caves State Park.
