Two Rivers YMCA Expands

Thanks to the purchase of a nearby church, the Two Rivers YMCA in Moline will be able to expand and add programs. Today it held a ribbon cutting at the Union Congregational Church, across 48th Street, from the Y.

YMCA ceo, Mike Wennekamp, says the two have worked together informally for about ten years. But when church leaders said they could no longer afford to stay, the Y decided to buy the property, and continue sharing the facilities with the church.

The agreement with the church includes leasing the property to the congregation for 15 years.

The Two Rivers YMCA now serves more than 11,000 people a year.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
