Just as Rock Island County moves closer to a final decision on the courthouse, a statewide group is trying to promote its preservation. Wednesday Landmarks Illinois released its annual list of the Most Endangered Historic Places in the state.

The list includes the Rock Island County Courthouse - it was built in 1897 in the Spanish Renaissance or Roman style, and has served the county ever since. But it is now being considered for demolition after decades of neglect. A new justice center that would replace many of its functions is under construction and should be finished late this year.

Also on the list of endangered historic places in Illinois is the Central Congregational Church in Galesburg. It dates back to 1898, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. But a lack of funding means the church needs major repairs. Landmarks Illinois says the congregation needs to find new sources of money, or sell it, as part of some long-term solution.

More information about this year's list of endangered historic places is available at the Landmarks Illinois website.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
