A unique type of choir will perform Saturday in Davenport. Following the popularity of the Tuba Christmas events across the country, lovers of the saxophone have organized the Quad Cities Saxophone Christmas.
Spokeswoman Danelle Kvapil says she heard a group of local tuba players celebrate Christmas last year, and thought why not do the same for her favorite instrument.
She thinks one of the main problems is that it was not invented until 1847 so the saxophone is not included in many orchestral pieces.
"So we're not an orchestral instrument. We began our existence as a French band instrument so we've kind of gotten that black sheep of the family reputation and had to prove ourselves over the years. But we're just as standard as anybody else and make just as much music and have just as much fun."
Kvapil expects nearly 50 people will show up to play, and include every type of saxophone, from the sopranino at the high end all the way to the bass saxophone.
They'll play a variety of holiday music, arranged for large saxophone ensembles, from 1 to 2 pm Saturday in front of Dillard's at North Park Mall.
