River Bandits and Chiefs "Out for Blood"

Impact Life

The Quad Cities River Bandits and Peoria Chiefs have found another way to compete with each other. Through the end of the Midwest League baseball season, they'll see which team can recruit the most blood donors - in a campaign called "Out for Blood."

Kirby Winn from Impact Life says the teams will hold some blood drives at their stadiums, and encourage fans to go to donation centers.

"Summer can be a really challenging time for the blood supply but we also know that during the summer months people love to go to the ballpark and that each of these teams has a great and supportive fan base of community-minded individuals who we hope will respond."

When people make blood donation appointments they can use a special code for the Out for Blood competition to show which team they support.

River Bandits owner Dave Heller says his main goal is to promote blood donation at a time when it's needed more than ever.

"And the only thing I enjoy more than beating Peoria at anything is receiving a trophy for it and displaying it for everybody to see that the Quad Cities is a better community than Peoria."

Blood donors will receive a voucher from their team for a general admission ticket to the final series of the season between the River Bandits and Chiefs, in early September.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois. While a graduate student in the Public Affairs Reporting Program at the University of Illinois at Springfield (then known as Sangamon State University), he got his first taste of public radio, covering Illinois state government for WUIS. Here in the Quad Cities, Herb worked for WHBF Radio before coming to WVIK in 1987. Herb also produces the weekly public affairs feature Midwest Week – covering the news behind the news by interviewing reporters about the stories they cover.
