Fire Chief Jeff Yerkey says the tradition of holding this service goes back decades.
"We just hold this memorial service annually to honor all of our firefighters who've passed away over the history of our department going all the way back to 1891."
Retired and active firefighters, family members, and leaders in the community all participate each year.
Yerkey says at the ceremony, the mayor will be the featured speaker and the names of those who have died will be read. The Honor Guard will post the colors and ring the 120 year old Central Fire Station bell.
"We've had quite a few firefighters throughout our past who've served the community with dedication and pride. And it's important for us to let the community know that there were those firefighters who served the community well and who have past and we need to recognize that."
The ceremony will be held on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Rock Island's Central Fire Station and it will be followed by a reception in the station.
