Pritzker helps celebrate completion of I-280 Mississippi River bridge reconstruction

WVIK News

50 years after it was first built, the I-280 bridge has a new deck. It's officially called the Sergeant John Baker Mississippi River Bridge.

This morning at the King Center in Rock Island, Governor JB Pritzker joined local officials in celebrating the completion of this project. He says it's just one piece in modernizing every part of Illinois' infrastructure.

"We embarked on the largest rebuild of roads and bridges in state history here in the Quad Cities region and throughout Illinois."

According to Pritzker, the I-280 bridge project will provide a safer and smoother ride. Over 28,000 vehicles drive over it each day.

"Today I'm proud to announce that we completed the restoration of Baker Bridge. Replacing the deck, repainting the bridge to preserve the steel sub structure, and updating the lighting infrastructure. All while patching and resurfacing I-280 from the bridge to just east of the Milan beltway."

The project began in 2021 and totaled over $65 million.

The I-280 bridge re-construction is part of Rebuild Illinois, a program to improve transportation throughout Illinois.
