A former president, and a trustee, will help international students attend Augustana College. Steve Bahls and his wife Jane have established the Nelly Cheboi Endowed Scholarship.

With matching money from Trustee Murry Gerber, it will help international students pay the cost of attending Augustana.

It's named for Nelly Cheboi, from the class of 2016 who grew up in Kenya. She's the co-founder of a non-profit, TechLit Africa, that sets up computer labs in rural Kenya with recycled computers and other equipment.

In December, she was named CNN's Hero of the year.

The Bahls have committed $50,000 with additional dollars coming from a matching challenge from Gerber. It is anticipated the first award will be made in three years.

The Bahls became acquainted with Cheboi in 2011 when their church, Trinity Lutheran Church, in Moline, sponsored her room and board.
