A local shelter is inviting people to get cold feet this weekend to raise money for homeless people.

Tomorrow morning, Christian Care will host its first walk entitled, "Frigid Feet: Stepping into the Shoes of the Unsheltered."

Lexi Bull, from Christian Care, says the nonprofit has two shelters where it serves more than 300 people every year. It also serves 35,000 meals per year and provides many resources to help people get jobs and apartments.

Both shelters have waiting lists.

The men's shelter in downtown Rock Island has 42 beds, and the women's and children's shelter has 20. With the arrival of winter, Bull says both shelters have waiting lists.

Christian Care is 100 years old and has always been located in downtown Rock Island to serve people close to where they are. It was founded by a professional boxer named Guy Rogers.

Registration for Frigid Feet begins tomorrow at 8 am with the one-and-a-half mile walk starting at 8:30. It'll begin and end at the Christian Care men's shelter at 2209 3rd Avenue in Rock Island. And HyVee will provide a bowl of soup and half-a-sandwich to each walker.

Bull says the shelters need toilet paper and paper towels. Cash donations are always welcome. And Christian Care could use more volunteers. More information is at https://www.christiancareqc.org.

Next week, the agency will participate in the annual Homeless Memorial Day service to honor those who have died over the last year. It'll be held Wednesday at 5:30 pm at Davenport's Zion Lutheran Church.
