Judges in Illinois' 14th Judicial Circuit have chosen a new leader. Friday they elected Frank Fuhr to be the new chief judge.

A judge from Peoria will preside over the Rock Island County courthouse demolition case.

Late last week, the Illinois Supreme Court sent a letter to the chief judge of the 10th Judicial Circuit.

It instructed him to assign a judge to hear the complaint filed in the neighboring 14th circuit.

Rock Island County is apparently at a crossroads. A contractor is on the verge of demolishing the courthouse as soon as asbestos has been removed.

But historic preservation groups have filed a lawsuit claiming the Rock Island County Board and its Public Building Commission are violating state law.

The chief judge of Illinois' 14th Circuit says the Rock Island County Courthouse is a danger to employees and the public. That's why last Friday, Walter Braud issued an administrative order to the Rock Island County Board and its Public Building Commission to demolish it as soon as possible.

Michelle O'Neill reports the process could begin within a couple of weeks, when a contractor completes removing asbestos from the courthouse.

Late this week, Rock Island County will start moving out of the old courthouse and into a new annex to the criminal justice center. This afternoon, county officials held a grand opening for the three-story building located on Third Avenue in downtown Rock Island.

A lot of the literal groundwork has been done on Rock Island County's $28 million Criminal Justice Center annex. The three-story building will include four courtrooms and offices for court administration, the circuit clerk, and the state's attorney and his staff.

An attempt to solve Rock Island County's courthouse problem is being challenged in court. Today, a special appellate prosecutor filed a complaint against the county's Public Building Commission for over-stepping its authority in June when it voted to buy property for an addition to the justice center.

Now that a selection committee has been chosen, it will soon start going over applications for the new board of directors for the Rock Island County nursing home. Last night the county board appointed two members to the committee - one from each party.
