The Carol Center Expands

Thanks to a growing number of clients, a program helping people with chronic mental illness has moved to a new, and larger building. Thursday morning the Vera French Community Mental Health Center held a ribbon cutting for The Carol Center in Davenport.


A longtime Davenport charity will close after losing funding and struggling to resolve questions about mismanagement. The Quad-City Times reports United Neighbors' board announced Wednesday the social service agency will close.

Back in March, a community agency in Davenport was told it would have to pay back a large grant to the state. United Neighbors was asked to return $235,000 from a rental assistance program.

Davenport Celebrates Juneteenth

Local businesses and organizations have joined forces to sponsor this year's Juneteenth celebration in the Quad Cities. The yearly festival commemorates June 19th, 1865, the day Union Soldiers announced emancipation of the slaves in Galveston, Texas.

When a Davenport man heard that the number of "shots fired" incidents this year in the city have already surpassed all of last year, he waited-- hoping some organization or church would stand up and address the problem. When they didn't, he decided to take action himself.

A lifetime of service to Davenport and the Quad Cities will be recognized next month. Ida Johnson, founder and executive director of United Neighbors, will be inducted into the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame.
