More than 3,000 members of the United Steelworkers Union, including some in the Quad Cities, will vote Thursday on a new contract. Late last month the union and Arconic reached a tentative agreement.

Their second attempt to negotiate a new contract seems to have worked. On Friday Arconic and the United Steelworkers Union announced they've reached a tentative agreement. 

Talks are scheduled to resume this week between Arconic and the United Steelworkers Union, afffecting about 1,900 hourly workers at the plant in Riverdale. 

Steelworkers Local 105

Workers at one of the Quad Cities largest employers are willing to go on strike if they can't agree on a new contract. Thursday members of Local 105 of the Steelworkers Union, who work at the Arconic plant in Riverdale, approved a strike authorization for their leaders.

There's no new agreement, but they're still talking. That's the report from Pittsburgh where the United Steelworkers Union is negotiating a new contract with Arconic - their five-year agreement was set to expire Wednesday night, but both sides agreed to extend the agreement while meetings continue.

United Steelworkers Union

The current contract expires late Wednesday night for one of the Quad Cities largest employers and the United Steelworkers union. Negotiations with Arconic, formerly part of Alcoa, affect 1,900 hourly workers here, and 1,400 more in 3 other states.

Joan Marttila

A retired educator from Bettendorf is running for a seat in the Iowa House. Monday Joan Marttila announced she's running as a democrat in District 94, which includes Bettendorf, Riverdale, Panorama Park, and northeast Davenport.

Arconic plans to freeze pension plan contributions for U.S. workers, and instead make contributions to a 401(k) plan for employees.

The company says the freeze only applies to the accrual of benefits for about 7,900 salaried employees plus hourly employees who are not members of a union. Retirees who are already collecting benefits will NOT be affected.

Water bills for residents of Blue Grass will look different beginning later this month. Friday the Iowa American Water company, which already serves the Iowa Quad Cities, announced the purchase of the Blue Grass city water system.

Arconic plants in Illinois and Iowa are now the exclusive suppliers of aluminum to Toyota for its Lexus RX. The SUV is Toyota's first car made in North America to include aluminum sheet in its exterior panels. Arconic announced the deal last week.

An Arconic official says the benefits of using aluminum in vehicles include better gas mileage, improved safety, and the ability to carry or tow more passengers and cargo.
