Illinois legislators usually get nothing but grief when they raise taxes, but this summer a group is touring the state to say "thanks" for raising the gas tax. Wednesday the Transportation for Illinois Coalition visited the Quad Cities to recognize two members of the General Assembly who voted "yes."

State Representative Mike Halpin from Rock Island will help the new governor of Illinois with economic development. On Monday, governor-elect. J.B. Pritzker announced the creation of the transition committee on economic opportunity.

Midwest Interstate Passenger Rail Commission

A member of the Illinois General Assmbly from the Quad Cities wants to help expand passenger rail service in this part of the country. State Representative Mike Halpin from Rock Island has just been appointed to the Midwest Interstate Passenger Rail Commission. 


Illinois may help communities along the Mississippi River save their historic buildings. State representative Mike Halpin from Rock Island is sponsoring a bill to make tax credits available for rehabilitating historic structures.

One day after Illinois officially began its bicentennial celebration, Rock Island joined in. Monday city and state officials raised the state's bicentennial flag outside city hall.

QC Area Representatives Vote "No" On Income Tax Hike

The Illinois House voted 72-45 yesterday in favor of raising personal income taxes by 32 percent. The tax increase is part of a revenue plan that would end the state's two-year budget standoff.

But the plan did not have the support of Quad Cities area representatives.

A Rock Island attorney and a Moline business owner are competing to represent residents of Illinois House District 72. That's Pat Verschoore's seat. The Milan democrat will retire after the fall veto session.

Before democratic candidate Mike Halpin went into private practice, he worked for Congressman Lane Evans, helping constituents deal with government agencies.

A new group in the Quad Cities is providing another opportunity for black and Latino voters to hear from local candidates. At 5:30 Thursday night, the Black and Brown Political Coalition of the Quad Cities will hold its second candidate forum.
