Enrollment is growing in the Rock Island schools, and for the first time in decades, the budget is balanced. That's according to Superintendent Reginald Lawrence during his first State of the Schools Address Tuesday to a joint meeting of the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs.

Last year was a good year for the city of Rock Island, but there's still a lot of work to do. That was the message Monday from Mayor Mike Thoms during his annual state of the city address to a joint meeting of the Kiwanis and Rotary clubs.

A balanced budget, strong bond rating, and stable tax rate are all highlights of last year in Rock Island. That's according to Mayor Dennis Pauley who gave his annual state of the city address Tuesday to a joint meeting of Kiwanis and Rotary clubs.

The long list of accomplishments includes major projects by various city departments, plus new, and expanding local companies. And Walmart signed a contract to build a new superstore on 11th Street.

Pauley says Mother Nature also helped Rock Island last year.

Despite harsh temperatures, flooding, and fires, 2014 was a good year for Rock Island. That was the message today  from Mayor Dennis Pauley during his annual state of the city address to a joint meeting of Kiwanis and Rotary clubs.  Last year, Rock Island was forced to make unexpected repairs to streets after flooding and extreme cold temperatures. And, a fire in September damaged some downtown buildings.
