Sept. 11 Remembrance Ceremony

About 200 people gathered on Arsenal Island Tuesday morning to mark the 17th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks. At the 9/11 memorial, they honored the  nearly 3,000 who died in New York, Washington DC, and near Shanksville Pennsylvania.

Twitty Leaves First Army

First Army

The commanding general of First Army is leaving. On Thursday, during a "relinquishment of command ceremony" on Arsenal Island, First Army will say good-bye to Lieutenant General Stephen Twitty.


The Army and the Rock Island Arsenal are helping the Illinois National Guard prepare for summer training. This week on the island, soldiers from the guard loaded 200 vehicles onto railroad cars that will travel to Fort Polk in Louisiana.

The Rock Island Arsenal's U.S. Army Garrison has a new commander. Col. Stephen Marr begins his first full day on the job Thursday, after the Arsenal held a change-of-command ceremony Wednesday. WVIK's Benjamin Payne was there, and has this report:

First Army is inviting everyone to Arsenal Island to help celebrate its centennial. On Friday, the unit will show a movie outside on a big screen at Memorial Field.


More soldiers and their families can now live on Arsenal Island. Friday the Army celebrated the opening of 71 new single family homes and duplexes for soldiers from First Army and the Army Sustainment Command.

Memorial Day services

Government Bridge will be closed for part of the weekend.

A major section of the historic Colonel Davenport House on Arsenal Island has been restored, making it available to the public for the first time in the home's 185-year history. Benjamin Payne reports:
