United Steelworkers Union

The current contract expires late Wednesday night for one of the Quad Cities largest employers and the United Steelworkers union. Negotiations with Arconic, formerly part of Alcoa, affect 1,900 hourly workers here, and 1,400 more in 3 other states. / Arconic Eagle Camera

High water has affected a family of eagles at Arconic's Davenport Works. Don't worry, parents "Liberty" and "Justice" and their two eaglets are fine. But you can't view their nest online anymore.

Arconic is not for sale anymore. The company made the announcement in a press release this morning.

Arconic says it was considering a sale over the past year but didn't receive any offers that were in the best interest of shareholders.

The board of directors and managers were in the process of reviewing the company's strategy and finances.

It also says the sale of one part of Arconic will proceed. That's the Building and Construction Systems business.

Arconic plans to freeze pension plan contributions for U.S. workers, and instead make contributions to a 401(k) plan for employees.

The company says the freeze only applies to the accrual of benefits for about 7,900 salaried employees plus hourly employees who are not members of a union. Retirees who are already collecting benefits will NOT be affected.

News headlines for the morning of December 21, 2017:

Apollo, Gemini, and Mercury are now part of a multi-year study of eagles in the midwest. Tuesday morning tracking devices were attached to the three eaglets from the nest near the Arconic plant in Riverdale.

The votes are in, and the names of the eaglets hatched this year in Riverdale are Apollo, Gemini, and Mercury. Parents, Liberty and Justice, are raising the three in their nest at Arconic's Davenport Works.

Spokesman John Riches says Apollo, Gemini and Mercury are names from the US space program. And all those missions used aluminum produced at the Davenport factory.
