Younkers and Bergners May Close

Shopping malls in the Quad Cities and across the midwest could soon have some major vacancies. The Bon Ton Stores is moving toward liquidation, and that includes Younkers and Bergners in Iowa and Illinois.

Bon Ton filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, and could not find a buyer willing to continue operating the business. Then Wednesday at auction, the winning bids came from a couple of liquidation firms. And their takeover could be approved by a bankruptcy court in Delaware.

Younkers stores that could close are located in Iowa in Davenport's NorthPark Mall, Dubuque, Muscatine, West Burlington, and Coralville. Also at risk is the Younkers in SouthPark Mall in Moline.

Bergners stores that might close include Galesburg, Sterling, Quincy, and two in Peoria.

In all, Bon Ton has 260 stores in 24 states, mostly in the northeast and midwest.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
