Veterans Day Events

The Marching Maroons band from Moline High School will play for veterans at the annual Veterans Breakfast at HyVee, 4218 Avenue of the Cities, from 7:30 to 8 am on Monday. The band will also play at 9 am during a flag raising ceremony at the John Deere Seeding Group, 501 River Drive, in Moline.

The annual Veterans Day ceremony at Hero Street Memorial Park in Silvis will be held on Monday at 11 am. Keynote speaker will be Lieutenant General Thomas James, First Army Commanding General.

VFW Post 2153 in Moline will hold a Veterans Day Observance, 1721 7th Street, on Monday, starting at 11 am. The speaker will be Major Robert Olness, a training officer from First Army on Arsenal Island. 

The American Legion Post Veterans Day Ceremony in Sterling will be held in Centennial Auditorium (1608 4th Avenue), on Monday at 11 am. First Army Historian Captain Kevin Braafladt will be the featured speaker. 

In East Moline, American Legion Post 227 will host a Veteran’s Day Program – on Monday at 1 pm. The keynote speaker will be Chaplain Major Charles Scott, from the Army’s Joint Munitions Command.

Due to a cold and windy forecast, the annual Veterans Day ceremony on Arsenal Island will NOT be held in the National Cemetery, but instead in Building 60 - Heritage Hall. It will begin at 1 pm, with featured speaker Major General Steven Shapiro, Commanding General of the Army Sustainment Command. 

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
