Urban Garden Hopes to Promote Community

All are welcome to help pull weeds, water, and harvest locally grown vegetables from a new community garden. The Hilltop Campus Village has partnered with People Uniting Neighbors and Churches, or PUNCH, to plant a new garden in Davenport.

Scott Tunnicliff, Executive Director of the Hilltop Campus Village, says the garden is a hoop house, similar to a green house.

"A 'U' shaped building and it is coated in plastic sheeting around a wood frame. It has a front door and a back door where you can load and unload things. Inside it has tables where seedlings can be put out. And we intend on having it to be supplied with water and supplied with heat, so that it can grow even in the winter time.

Hilltop has one urban garden at First Baptist Church in Davenport. It's growing about 10 different vegetables. And, Hilltop hopes to keep expanding by finding a new area for a third garden.

"If we've got young families or senior citizens that are coming over to tend or harvest, they do that together and they get to know each other. It's promoting interaction."

The second Urban Garden is located at the southwest corner of 15th and Scott Street in Davenport.
