University Honors Veterans with Athletic Center

A new center will support student athletes and honor veterans. Today, the University of Dubuque held a dedication ceremony for its Veterans Memorial Training Center.

Since opening in January, the 40,000 square foot building has been home to the school's athletic programs. Vice President, Peter Smith, says renaming it will remind students of history and the sacrifices soldiers have made.
Smith says the University of Dubuque hosted a training camp for soldiers during World Wars I and II, and he believes the new Veterans Memorial Training Center is just one way to honor soldiers, past and present.

"It's now our responsibility to work hard to make sure that our country is strong and that there's justice for all people in this country."

The $1.3 million Veterans Memorial Training Center was donated by alumnus, Hans Chlapaty, who graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1968.
