This month, you may see blue, silver, shiny pinwheel gardens all over the Quad Cities to remind people about child abuse. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the Child Abuse Council is partnering with 11 companies to help raise awareness.
Director of Development and Communications, Christine Coleman, says a number of prevention programs are available.
"We have parenting classes that we teach for expecting father to help them understand their role as a father. We have programs for families who are at risk. You know the Healthy Families Home Visiting Program to help educate them and help them get off to a good start."
It's difficult to know how many children are affected because organizations and police only know about reported cases.
Coleman says the Child Abuse Council focuses on prevention. And various agencies, such as police departments and schools, help raise awareness every April.
"We go and we actually plant these pinwheel gardens. And the pinwheel really is a symbol of hope and a symbol of a care-free childhood and a bright future that we hope to create for all children."
St. Ambrose, the Moline and Davenport police departments, and the Rock Island Arsenal are just a few places where pinwheel gardens can be found this month. The annual Lifesaver fundraiser will be at the TaxSlayer Center on the 25th.
