With the election less than three weeks away, and early voting already started, officials of Rock Island County continue pushing for a tax referendum on the ballot. The proposed increase of one-half of one per cent in the local sales tax would support law enforcement, including the sheriff's department and jail.
Sheriff Gerry Bustos will hold two more tall hall meetings to ask voters for their support - one will be held in Andalusia Thursday night at 6:30 at the fire station on First Street.
- a second is set for next Wednesday, October 26th at the Rapids City Village Hall.
Bustos says the new revenue is desperately needed - to buy modern equipment, but also to avoid large scale layoffs in his department - as many as 33 employees, or 5 per cent of his staff.
