Searching for Our Next Helpenstell Intern

Thanks to a grant from the Amy Helpenstell Foundation, WVIK in Rock Island, Illinois,  Quad Cities NPR, is looking for someone to fill a six-month position in the newsroom, starting soon (usually in March).
The purpose of the grant is to help young journalists develop their skills, and get a good start on their careers.

The person hired will work with News Director Herb Trix and News Editor Michelle O'Neill writing, editing, reporting, and announcing local news, ranging from political candidates, and school boards, to economic development and art gallery openings. He or she will have daily on-air responsibilities, primarily in the afternoon and evening.
Basic radio broadcasting and reporting experience is required. Familiarity with public radio is a plus.
The pay is $10 per hour, for a 40 hour week.
Please e-mail Herb Trix at to start the application process. An in-person interview in Rock Island is preferred, along with a resume, aircheck or demo recording, writing samples, and references. Deadline for letting us know you're interested is 12/19/14.
Finalists must also pass a background check. WVIK is an equal opportunity employer, and is owned by Augustana College.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
