To help Kraft Heinz build a new plant, Scott County has to re-zone a narrow strip of land. This week, the board of supervisors will probably approve changing the zoning from agricultural to light industrial, along Slopertown Road, and just south of Eldridge.
Planning Director, Tim Huey, says the site for the new food processing plant totals 75 acres, but if all of that is annexed by Davenport, it will create an "island" or piece of un-incorporated property surrounded by city land - that's prohibited by Iowa law.
That strip of land will be 250 feet wide, and about 14-hundred feet long, and cover a total of 8 1/2 acres. Eventually, it'll be annexed by Davenport.
Huey says the county is anxious to help the city, as it helps Kraft Heinz build a new plant that will replace the current Oscar Mayer plant just west of downtown Davenport.
