Salvation Army Response

Despite the pandemic, the Salvation Army is continuing to provide as many services as possible in the Quad Cities.

Director of Development Bill Horrell says their goals are the same - serve the needy - but delivering those services has changed. Case management is only being done by phone and not in person. And it continues to operate a food pantry.

"In fact we are expanding our food pantry, which was one Wednesday a month to every Wednesday from 9 am to 4 pm, at our 100 Kirkwood Boulevard location - that will be until further notice."

The Salvation Army is also helping other local agencies find housing for people because some shelters have had to close because of COVID-19.

"So they are transitioning those people into the model that we're using with housing them in extended-stay hotels for up to 30 days."

In addition, Horrell says like many other churches, the Salvation Army has moved its Sunday morning service to Livestream on Facebook - the services are archived for those who can't listen at 11 am. Sunday school and Bible study are now on Facebook Messenger.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
