Most dinner parties include eating, but not all of them feature making lunch for kids too. Thursday, March 27th, 500 women will meet at the Rhythm City Casino in Davenport to talk about childhood hunger.
The River Bend Foodbank will host its inaugural Women Fighting Hunger Dinner. Vice President Nancy Renkes says one of every five children in its service area don't know where their next meal is coming from. The foodbank serves 23 counties in eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois. The goal is to encourage women to help school food pantries and the backpack program.
"Those are 14 items that are put into a bag, that are put into a child's backpack at the end of the day on Friday. So that they have food to eat over the weekend," said Renkes. "We also have school pantries. They can get food not only for the kids, but for the entire family."
The keynote speaker will be Nataly Kogan, an entrepreneur and CEO of the social media network, "Happier". She'll talk about her own childhood, growing up being hungry, and what to do about it.
This is the first time the River Bend Foodbank has hosted a Women Fighting Hunger Dinner, a Feeding America initiative. And it sold out.
