R.I. Golf Courses Open - With Restrictions

Rock Island Parks and Recreation

Despite the pandemic, life will at least begin to return to normal for one group of people. Following the relaxation of the stay-at-home rules by the governor of Illinois, two golf courses in Rock Island will re-open this weekend.

Todd Winter, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, says "the phone has been ringing off the hook" since the department began scheduling tee times for Highland Springs and Saukie golf courses. But there are some new rules - starting Friday, only groups of two will be allowed to play, at 15 minute intervals.

"Normally we have groups of four and they're spaced out every eight minutes, so the tee times are spread out almost twice as long as they normally are and only half as many people in each tee time. It does cut back significantly on how many people we can actually put out on the course each day."

In addition, no carts will be allowed except for those with physical limitations, no practice facilities either for driving or putting, and all reservations must be pre-paid. Only take-out food and refreshments will be available from the clubhouses.

Winter says the Parks and Recreation Department was scheduled to open the two golf courses for the season on March 23rd, just as the first stay-at-home orders were issued in Illinois.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
