Renovation Plans for Rock Island High School

Local residents can help design some renovations and additions now being planned for  Rock Island High School. Wednesday night school officials will hold the first of three public Zoom meetings for comments and suggestions.

Chief Financial Officer Bob Beckwith says 12.2 million dollars from the local option sales tax will be used to pay for the projects.

"Re-locating the main office to the ground floor, instead of coming in on the ground floor and having to be escorted up to the office. All the main offices will be located on the ground floor at the main entry, just to try to secure the building a little bit better."

Along with making the main entry more secure, projects include building a student commons area, renovating the cafeteria, and building a "production kitchen" for district food service.

Beckwith says when the local option tax was approved by voters, the top priority was to make all the schools in the district more secure. And the high school will be the last to have that work done.

Wednesday night's public forum begins at 6:30. Representatives from the architect and construction firm will participate.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
