Only one side of the I-280 bridge over the Mississippi River is open.
This week, all traffic was been moved to the Illinois-bound lanes for crews to replace the concrete bridge deck the Iowa-bound lanes.
Michelle O'Neill reports.
Preliminary work started in January.
Ryan Hippen, Field Engineer from the Illinois Department of Transportation, says it's a three-year project. This construction season, the westbound side will be closed and pavement replaced. The eastbound lanes will be closed and deck replaced in 2022.
In 2023, the bridge approach to the intersection with Illinois 92 will be re-surfaced. The bridge will also be repainted.
The Illinois DOT scheduled the I-280 deck replacement project to coordinate with the opening of at least four lanes on the new, I-74 bridge.
More than 20,000 vehicles use the I-280 bridge every day.
Hippen says Kraemer North America is the general contractor for the $50 million project.
