QC Kwik Star Criterium Returns For 52nd Year

Quad Cities Criterium

Bike racing returns to the Quad Cities this weekend for the 52nd year. On Monday the Village of East Davenport will host the Quad Cities Kwik Star Criterium.

One of the organizers, John Harrington, from the Quad Cities Bicycle Club, says the 12 races through the streets of the village will last anywhere from 15 to 75 minutes.

"It's flexible. It depends on the race tactics occurring that day. Sometimes it can be very tactical and slower and sometimes, based on the participants, it can be very fast. And with a tail wind going up the hill it could be fast."

Racers will be notified when there are 5 laps left, and then one.

In addition to the usual races for children, men, and women, Harrington says there'll be the second running of the Healthy Habits Faterium.

"We did this last year - it's people on their fat tire bikes - 5 inch wide tires. We had no idea what to expect. 75 people showed up and we're doing the same thing this year. It was a blast  - people had a lot of fun."

The criterium on Memorial Day will be the final event in four days of bike racing in eastern Iowa that also features criteriums in Burlington and Muscatine.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
