Possible Tuition Hike at BHC

Tuition at Black Hawk College may go up next fall. Thursday night the Board of Trustees will discuss a proposal to raise tuition by two dollars per credit hour, to 149 dollars for in-district students.

Chief Financial Officer, Steve Frommelt, says once again the problem is the state of Illinois.

"With the uncertainty of state funding, the administration is being very cognizant of maintaining an affordable tuition rate while being able to afford the high quality education of Black Hawk College."

Black Hawk is expecting to lose nearly two million dollars in state funding next year, continuing a decline that began in 2002. And he says budget cuts may also be necessary to balance next year's budget - not just because of the state but also because of falling enrollment.

Currently, tuition at Black Hawk is lower than Carl Sandburg College by eight dollars per hour, but higher than Sauk Valley by 25 dollars.

Black Hawk trustees may make a final decision on tuition at their February meeting (2/23).
